ABOUT US

aboutusC&F Motor Spares was founded in 1995 by Claudi van Rooyen and a partner, Fanie. Claudi, who lived in Bloemfontein all his life, started working in the motor industry in 1977 as a tyre salesman. In 1982 he started working at a spares shop as a parts and accessories salesman.

The first C&F Motor Spares was at 43 Glen Road, Hilton, and had a floor area of only 84m². They did all the work themselves. They were the salesmen, cleaners, drivers, bookkeepers, tea girls and managers. Whatever was required, they did it.

The business grew rapidly and soon needed bigger premises. The next year they moved to 63 Glen Road, Hilton, with a floor area of 240m². Here they stayed for the next five years, where they built the business into a strong competitor in Bloemfontein.

In 1998 a branch was opened in Jeffreys Bay, and in September of that same year Claudi bought out his partner Fanie and Fanie became owner of the Jeffreys Bay branch. Now as sole owner of C&F Motor Spares, Claudi went from strength to strength, and opened a branch in Botshabelo and in Thaba Nchu in 2000, and in Sterkspruit in 2001.

In 2002 he had outgrown his premises again and bought his own building at 46 Lombard Street, Hilton with a floor area of 420m². C&F Motor Spares currently still resides at these premises. They have been renovated and expanded continually and include C&F Bolt & Nut and Number Plate Centre.

In October 2010 Claudi sadly passed away at the age of 53. The business was bought by Trevor Gibson who had been working there since 2000.

Claudi always believed in hard work, honesty and service to his clientele. This is what made him and his business successful, and is the goal that we still strive for every day.

Louis operated as a Franchise Manager for all the Competitor’s Branches, and did the setup of all new branches nationwide, including Botswana. He trained the Staff and implemented the correct procedures in order for these Franchises to operate their shops successfully.

Chas Everitt International opens a new hotspot Hartenbos

Category Chas Franchise News

Hartenbos is no longer just a sleepy seaside village near Mossel Bay – and certainly not when it comes to property sales. Like many Garden Route destinations, it has experienced a significant influx of new residents and homebuyers in recent years and is now expanding rapidly.

So says Chantelle Grard, principal of the Chas Everitt International franchise in Mossel Bay, who with her business partner Charmaine Deacon has just opened a new office in Hartenbos to serve the growing market. This office has a high-visibility location on the corner of Louis Fourie and Boekenhout streets at the entrance to the village and already has a complement of six top agents.

“Hartenbos has always been a popular holiday and retirement destination due to its mild climate, a beautiful Blue Flag beach, warm sea, river frontage and many opportunities to experience unspoilt nature, including regular sightings of the Southern Right whales that return to this coast every year,” she notes.

“It is also only about 10 minutes’ drive from Mossel Bay and all the amenities of the bigger centre. The Langeberg Mall with 90 stores and restaurants is the closest shopping centre to Hartenbos, and we also have some of the best medical facilities in SA, including two private hospitals and a provincial hospital.

“As a result, most of the properties in the village used to be holiday homes that were occupied only part of the year, but in the past two years we have seen a huge increase in the number of permanent residents, many of whom have relocated with their families from GautengLimpopo and the Northern Cape because of the great lifestyle this area offers. There are also excellent public and private schools in Mossel Bay, which is where most Hartenbos residents work.”

And in recent months, Grard says, both the number of sales and home prices in Hartenbos and Hartenbos Heuwels have also increased steeply, especially in the secure complexes that are favoured by upcountry buyers. “There is also the Monte Christo eco-estate in this area, where more than 114 stands and 38 homes have been sold in the past 12 months.”

She says it is also interesting to note that the population of Hartenbos is getting “younger”, with the biggest cohort of recent buyers (42%) being in the 35 to 50 age-group, while the biggest cohort of existing owners (37%) is in the 50 to 65 age group.

“The new entrants are mostly professionals and senior business people and their presence will boost the local economy as they spend their earnings here and in some cases establish new practices and businesses in the area. For those who need to travel on business, another major plus of living here is the fact that the George airport is just 45km away and offers daily flights to Johannesburg,  Cape Town and Durban.”

Deeds Office statistics show that the average price of sectional title homes in Hartenbos has risen from R950 000 a year ago to around R1,2m currently, Grard says, and the average price of freehold homes from R1,35m to just under R1,6m. “There have been more than 140 home sales in the area in the past 12 months and the strength of demand is further indicated by the fact that the average number of days that a home is on the market before being sold has dropped from 97 to 82.

“In the newer area of Hartenbos Heuwels, the average sectional title price has risen from R1,2m to around R1,6m currently and the average freehold price has shot up from R1,4m to over R2m. The number of days on market has dropped from 106 to 83. Meanwhile in the Monte Christo estate, the average stand price has risen from R400 000 to R450 000, and the average home price from R2m to almost R2,3m.”

Chas Everitt International currently has almost 100 properties for sale in and around Hartenbos (seewww.chaseveritt.co.za), and for more information or to arrange a viewing, buyers should call the new office on 044 0500 200.

badgeDuring the 1898 South African War the Duke of Cornwall, Prince of Wales Regiment built a fort on the highest hill south of Pretoria on a farm owned by the van der Byl family. Over the years, the hill became known as "Cornwall Hill": In the mid 1990s the hill and surroundings were turned into a luxury housing estate named "Cornwall Hill Estate" and Mr van der Byl donated some of the land for the building of a new private school, Cornwall Hill College. To maintain the connection with the past, the founders of the school decided to use symbols associated with the Duke and his Regiment. The bugle on the crest represents the Infantry bugle; the College coronet represents that of the Duke and the College tartan is his hunting tartan. The motto singuli omnes is latin for "one and all" and is the motto of both the Duke and his Regiment.

A BRIEF HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE 1998 - 2013

Compared with South Africa's independent schools of long standing, Cornwall Hill College is but a fledgling! None of the stately, old buildings with corridors that seem to carry the echoes of the thousands of voices of those who have gone before and whose shoes have scuffed and worn away surface areas of the paving blocks so carefully laid many years before.

Yet, there is no doubt whatever that our College has entered the independent schools' scene with a bang! In spite of our youth, we believe we can stand tall next to any of our fellow schools, with a sense of deep gratitude to God and all those who have been instrumental in taking Cornwall Hill College to where it is today.

The College is situated in Irene on some 25 hectares of land, donated for the purposes of education by the well known van der Byl family. Building operations commenced during 1997 and in January 1998 the doors opened to some 380 learners, ranging from Grade 0 to Grade 9. Currently our enrolment is in excess of 1700 learners, ranging from Grade 000 to Grade 12.

Despite having only been on the way for a decade, Cornwall Hill College has three interesting historical ties with events dating back to the late 19th and early and mid 20th centuries. The first two events are directly associated with Cornwall in England, while the third situation ties in with local history.

Firstly, our college is so named because of its close proximity to Cornwall Hill, a prominent hill south of Pretoria, on which a fort was built by the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry, at the time of the Anglo-Boer War. Their task was to safeguard the railway line between Johannesburg and Pretoria. As a result of the area's historical ties with Cornwall in England, we have created a Cornish theme in our College. Our crest, credo and uniform tartan are all derived from the Duke of Cornwall's heraldry and dress codes, while the four 'houses' are named after Cornish cities.

The second historical tie with the past revolves around a grade 12 learner of 2003, her great, great grandfather, Howard Lamb and her grandfather, Colin Duff. Howard Lamb, a fisherman, was also captain of a lifeboat that operated along the Cornish coast. His grandson, Colin Duff, often accompanied him on rescue missions. Visitors to our Library and Resources Centre will notice a ship's bell mounted on a wall in the entrance foyer. The bell was cast in the United Kingdom in 1899 and was fitted to a ship called the Mariposa, which was commissioned for service in January 1900. In May of the same year, while sailing along the Cornish coast, the Mariposa caught fire and was beached. She was later refloated, refurbished, sold and renamed. The original bell somehow landed in Howard Lamb's possession and he in turn gave Colin Duff the bell "in recognition for his help in rescues and for being the youngest lad to ably assist in sea rescues!" Years later Colin Duff's widow donated the bell to Cornwall Hill College, in honour of her granddaughter who was in Grade 12 in 2003.

Thirdly, the site on which Cornwall Hill College is built was originally the municipal refuse dumping site for Irene! The symbolism stemming from the 'then and now' speaks of creating something great out of nothing! This points uniquely to the growth and development of Cornwall Hill College, an institution that has literally grown out of what was essentially an eyesore created to absorb society's cast-offs, to its becoming a highly sought after institution! This is amply borne out by the phenomenal growth and development of our school, not only in relation to the buildings and state-of-the-art facilities, but more importantly, in the holistic nurturing, molding and educating of our learners from their 'raw material' years in the pre-school to their becoming locally relevant and internationally competitive young adults in Grade 12.

The first decade in the life of our school has passed and we are looking ahead to the next! Tribute is paid to all those who have in anyway contributed to the development and growth of our school during this time, especially to those intrepid pioneers who stepped out in faith, without knowing whether or not the venture would succeed. Their faith has been vindicated beyond their wildest dreams!
